The world is in danger and who will save it? A hero who has had enough and a band of misfits are the only hope. Ten years ago the world was threatened by a powerful Ice Lich. Twelve brave souls travelled north to deal with the danger. Eleven were the greatest heroes of the age. The Twelfth was Kel Kressia, a young man who wanted to be a hero. Twelve went north but only Kel returned. The bards sang his praise. He retired to the quiet life of a farmer and sought to forget about what he had seen and done. His escape was not going to last. As the weather gets bad again it becomes apparent that something is stirring once again in the north. The King wants Kel to go north and take care of the problem again. After all, he is the great hero. Kel has other ideas. He has no desire to risk the dangers of the north again and definitely not by himself. So he heads north, but with the intent to slip away and set himself up with a new life far, far away from the Five Kingdoms. Despite his past heroism, Kel is our titular coward. Along the way Kel becomes ensnared by others who seek to help him in his quest until he has no choice, he must head north. His companions are as misfit as himself and he has to find some way to lead them north, keep them alive, and fulfill their mission.
